What is Tomorrow's Leaders Today?

Media & Communications Skills Day

Teenagers who have experienced it will tell you it’s awesome, a life-changing and mind-opening odyssey, the absolute highlight of their junior year.

Tomorrow's Leaders Today (TLT) is a community education and leadership skill training program for students entering their junior year in the Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, Windsor, Cloverdale and Petaluma school districts in Sonoma County, California. Originally a program of the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce, Tomorrow's Leaders Today is patterned after their Leadership Santa Rosa program.

Each month, successful applicants spend a day with community leaders and experts visiting sites where they practice leadership skills, problem solving techniques, and teamwork. The program year kicks off with an orientation for the parents, and an overnight retreat where participants are introduced to each other, and to the community.

Throughout the academic year, students take part in 8 TLT program days exploring current issues, challenges, and opportunities in: 1) natural resources and agriculture, 2) government, 3) health/education, 4) human services , 5) planning and development, 6) criminal justice, 7) business and tourism, and 8) media and communication skills. The program year closes with a graduation celebration of the TLT experience for the students and their parents.

TLT's goal is to bring young leaders into active community roles that will continue throughout their adult lives, and it is sanctioned by the Santa Rosa, Windsor, Healdsburg, Cloverdale and Petaluma school districts, and accredited by Santa Rosa Junior College.

How effective is Tomorrow's Leaders Today?

"Tomorrow's Leaders Today is a great program! I have watched it grow and improve since its inception. I have seen participants return to the community after college and immediately make a difference. This minor investment in their learning experiences is returned many times over to the benefit of our city."

-- Mike Martini

Michelle King, a graduate student at the University of Oregon, and an alumnus of the very first TLT class, recently conducted research to assess the effectiveness of the program. She surveyed 89 past TLT graduates from the first 3 classes (1991 - 1993) to discover to what degree they continue to volunteer and hold leadership positions in their community.

The results of her study reveal that TLT has indeed been successful in meeting its goals.

  • 90% believe their participation in the Tomorrow's Leaders Today program has positively impacted their community involvement.
  • 72.5% consider themselves in a position of leadership at their jobs.
  • 57.5% were volunteering in their communities at the time of the study.
  • 42.5% feel they are holding leadership roles in their community involvement.

The majority of TLT graduates surveyed believe the Tomorrow's Leaders Today Program not only affected their choice of careers and their involvement in the community, but it also gave them a better understanding of their community, and the confidence needed to be a leader in it. In conclusion, Tomorrow's Leaders Today alumni say they feel they have experienced great personal growth from being involved in the program. They graduate from the program with a better understanding of their community, a new self-confidence, and the motivation to become involved in their communities.
